Description
My name is Ryan Heimke, and I am not an expert. That may seem like a strange way to start a parenting book, but my reasoning is simple: There are far too many books written by doctors and experts that make being a father sound like an exact and infallible science. They offer studies and charts to trick you into believing that parenthood is a string of methods to be perfected. They can be cold, distant and dishonest––far from the advice you need when you’re suffering from sleep deprivation after your first week with a newborn.
So, I wrote the book that I wanted to read. The first year of fatherhood is a challenging and brutal time for most men, but that doesn’t mean we need to suffer in silence or walk the journey alone. It may not be fun admitting that I’m just like every other new dad, that I’m not a millionaire with a nanny who did everything for me. I struggled. A lot. Instead of offering you a dozen facts on proper swaddling techniques, all I can do is tell you my story and hope that it helps you in some way.
My own first year of fatherhood may sound traditional to some, but don’t let that fool you into thinking my way is the only right way. Throughout this book, instead of saying something like spouse or partner or girlfriend, every time I’m referring to the mother of your child, I’ll just say wife. Instead of son or daughter, I may just say, daughter. I have an amazing wife named Meghan and a daughter named Olivia (Livi for short), but that doesn’t mean my advice and my story won’t apply to you if your girlfriend’s name is Samantha and you have a son named Nathan.
Meghan and I had our daughter in a hospital, we brought her home to a typical neighborhood and we frequent our local Costco like it’s going out of business. But even if you choose to have your baby a less traditional way, or live in a condo and detest bulk stores, you will still be changing a thousand disgusting diapers, waking up at unsightly hours of the morning you forgot existed and doing everything you can to save a dollar on formula. There will always be variations to the story of fatherhood, but there are some consistencies I feel confident in advising you on.
I can’t promise that my advice will help you become the best dad in the world. Maybe you’ll even figure out how to do something better than me. We spend so much time as men trying to solve every problem on our own and not nearly enough of it asking for help. Now, you don’t have to. Learn from my mistakes, improve on my success and, by all means, don’t outright ignore the experts. Just trust in the fact that you don’t need to be one to be a great dad yourself.
A lot of my story happens before day one, and a ton more has continued to happen after my daughter’s first birthday. Sandwiched somewhere in the middle is a tale of discovery and adventure wrought by a baby and her endless fascination with attempting to redefine the meaning of sleep. Come along with me on my first year, and I will tell you how I survived....
